“’Nice firing’ is a comment that I, too, make. Confronted with some masterpiece of ceramic art, these words slip unconsciously from my lips”. Recently though, I have come to think of things a little differently: Perhaps ‘nice cooling…’”

“Reduction Cooled”

November 8th- November 30th

curated by John Neely, professor at Utah State University, Logan ,UT.  prior to his untimely death last June.

Reception Saturday Nov. 8, 5-7 PM
Online Sunday Nov. 9 At Noon

John developed our modern understanding of the reduction cooling process; Posing that the cooling of a kiln is equally impactful to the color of the wares as is the heating. He taught us the cooling a kiln starved of oxygen to 1450 f  (down from 2300 f)  limit the re oxidation of minerals and can result in iron rich clays that run a beautiful range of color from rust to cast iron black, rather than the typical browns associated with stoneware.  – statement excerpted from Forrest Middelton, former Utah student.  Forrest’s graphic cup left of John’s teapot on the right.

Potters Curated by John Neely include: Shasta Krueger, Todd Hayes, Josh Scott, Megan Thomas, Lindsay Oesterritter, Dan Murphy, Trevor Dunn, Robin DuPont, and Forest Lesch-Middelton and John Neely.
A memorial scholarship has been established in John’s name at Utah State University. donate:https://www.usu.edu/advancement/give/memorial/johnneely

Warren MacKenzie 1924-2018. Warren shared his joy of making pots with all who knew him and particularly his many students (I was one).  Warren inspired his students to be teachers, then those teachers became teachers and onward. The list is long & his legacy great.  We have refinds from collectors and “saves” from TRAX for sale. a Quote from Warren I’d like to share:  “We, as faculty at the U of MN, have justified hiring people who don’t have a degree.I don’t even have a bachelors degree. NO DEGREE! So now I’m a Regents Professor. ha ha None of it makes any sense at all.”

Peter Voulkos

Although Peter Voulkos is known as a ceramist, like most artists, he worked simultaneously in different mediums. To him, whether it was graphic design, painting, ceramics, or metal working, one informed the other, altogether advancing his understanding of his work.
